Ohio's 6th Annual Special Education Leadership Conference
Closing the Achievement Gap: Show Me What Works!

The Ohio Department of Education’s Office for Exceptional Children invites you to attend Ohio’s 6th Annual Special Education Leadership Conference on September 26-27, 2012.
The Conference theme is Closing the Achievement Gap and the overarching focus is “Show Me What Works!” to improve results for children with disabilities in reading, math, and behavior.
"Very well organized and very good keynote speakers. They were very easy to listen to and motivating."2011 Conference Attendee
The Conference is designed by and for special educators. Nationally-recognized keynote speakers who have successfully worked with states and/or local districts to achieve improved performance for students with disabilities will kick-off each day. ODE consultants will provide the latest updates on special education issues. Technical assistance providers who work with local education agencies and local district staff from districts where children with disabilities have shown growth in reading or math achievement and where behavior is not holding them back will share efforts that are making a difference for students with disabilities.
A variety of Master sessions and concurrent sessions will be available for Special Education Directors, Supervisors, Coordinators, other administrative professionals, and Special Education instructional personnel. A specific strand on “Special Education Issues” will include a variety of sessions geared toward special education legal issues and monitoring issues to help Special Education Directors and other program administrators understand legal requirements. These sessions will provide information and knowledge about how to address Ohio’s top 10 noncompliance findings.
This year’s concurrent sessions will present professional development on effective instructional strategies that teachers can implement right away. A limited number of poster sessions will highlight some of the most current research on effective strategies in reading, math and behavior offered by Ohio’s Institutions of Higher Education and collaborations between researchers and vendors.
In support of this year’s conference commercial and non-profit vendors, including OEC’s Initiated Projects, will showcase a variety of products and services as well as conduct hands-on sessions for new and existing clients.
This conference aims to bring us all together toward a concerted effort to Close the Achievement Gap for students with disabilities in Ohio.

Gloria Ladson-Billings, Ph.D.
Having attended for twelve years and taught and supervised for ten years in Philadelphia public schools, Dr. Ladson-Billings knows and understands the complexities of teaching and learning in urban settings. The lessons learned as both a student and a teacher in an urban context remain with her still and permeate her work. As she has written, "I try not to romanticize my Philadelphia experience. It was the hardest work I have ever done. But I also recognize it as the foundation of my understanding of teaching and learning" (2004, xi).
Dr. Ladson-Billings built upon that foundation by completing an MA in education at the University of Washington and a PhD in curriculum and teacher education at Stanford University. After stints at Santa Clara University and Far West Educational Laboratory, she joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where she remains as Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education and professor of curriculum and instruction and educational policy studies.
The work of Dr. Ladson-Billings has been well recognized by the educational community. In addition to being elected president of the American Educational Research Association, she has served as editor for one of its journals and chair of a special interest group. Her scholarly awards include the H. I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship, the Palmer O. Johnson outstanding research award, a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and the George and Louise Spindler Award from the Council on Anthropology and Education for significant and ongoing contributions to the field of educational anthropology.
